With the launch of the EOS 5D and the EOS-1D Mark II N Canon introduced Picture Style to EOS cameras. All EOS cameras since then. Right from the introduction the cameras had the option to install custom and user created Picture Style files so that in-camera JPEG images can be created with the look required by the photographer.

Picture Style Editor is a software program that allows you to create your own personalised picture style files to achieve the look you want for your images. These picture styles can then be applied to your images in the RAW processing stage or loaded onto the camera and applied at the time of shooting.
Canon has worked jointly with Technicolor to develop a new “flat” picture style for Canon DSLRs. One of the most popular Flat pictures styles, and one that I often recommend is Marvels Cine Picture style. I thought It might be interesting to put these “flat” picture styles head to head and see how they compare.

Connect camera to computer using a USB cable, switch on the camera to start Canon EOS Utility

Select the Camera Settings / Remote Shooting option

Select Register User Defined style from the Shooting menu

Select one of the three User defined styles to store your Picture Style
Click the folder open button – circled in red – to select your chosen Picture Style file to install.

How do I get or make a custom Picture Style?
You can download a Picture Style form the internet or create your own with Canon’s Picture Style Editor. Picture Style Editor is included on the EOS Solution Disk that comes with each EOS camera. There are many resources online offering Picture Style files that can be downloaded, even Canon has one with several Picture Style files.

A tool for Canon camera owners, Picture Style Editor is a free utility for working with RAW images produced by digital SLRs. Images can be previewed and edited within the program.
Once installation has completed, you can drag-and-drop raw images into the interface of Picture Style Editor and immediately start editing them with several tools. At the moment, CRW, CR2, TIF and TIFF images are supported.
Some of the image enhancements you can perform with Picture Style Editor are sharpness, color saturation, color tone, brightness and contrast, etc. Other settings include white balance and color temperature. Adjustments made will be visible in the preview window.
Picture Style Editor is pretty basic overall and cannot complete against professional packages like Adobe Lightroom, but it does provide a starting point for Canon EOS camera owners. Without it, a bare Windows installation would not be able to even view RAW image files.
